WASHINGTON (AP) — The Phillips Collection is turning to the crowd to raise money for a new program to accompany a major exhibition focused on the artwork of Jacob Lawrence.

The museum launched a crowdfunding campaign Monday to raise funds to create a digital microsite featuring artwork and interviews between Lawrence and curators in 1992 and 2000. The interviews have not been previously published.

The project will cost $125,000. The museum has raised $80,000 and hopes to raise $45,000 through the monthlong crowdfunding campaign.

The site will coincide with an exhibit being co-organized with the Museum of Modern Art. "Jacob Lawrence: The Migration Series" will open in New York in spring 2015 and in Washington in fall 2016.

Lawrence is a major interpreter of the African-American experience through art.
