Easily calculate rewards for Kickstarter and IndieGoGo with this spreadsheet

posted Jun 17, 2014, 3:47 PM by Siamak Ebarhimi

When I was designing the different rewards for the Bionique Kickstarter (Subscribe to the Bionique newsletter to be notified when it goes live) I made a simple spreadsheet to quickly calculate how many people I needed and at what reward levels. I shared my spreadsheets with a couple friends and they found them useful so I decided to share them with everyone here.crowdfunding marketing

It’s very simple, but it can help bring clarity to your project. I made versions for both IndieGoGo and Kickstarter, select the one you need for your platform.kickstarter project

First, in order to not mess up any of the formulas only change the green cells.crowdfunding advertising

I hope the names I used are self explanatory, if not, here’s a brief description of each one:

Goal: The goal you want to set.

Reward: The name or description of the reward.

Price: The price you’ll give that reward for.

Cost: What the reward will cost you per customer.

Markup:* Price – Cost (a.k.a. the amount of money you’ll make per reward delivered).

Claimed: The amount of people you expect to claim or ‘purchase’ this reward.

Raised*: The amount of money that you’ll raise with that reward if the amount of people you put in ‘Claimed’ is accurate.

Net*: The amount of money you’ll have from that reward once you include the cost of actually delivering the actual reward to everyone (doesn’t include the fees that Kickstarter or IndieGoGo will charge you).kickstarter marketing

% of Total*: The percentage that reward represents of the total amount you raised.

Total raised*: Do I really need to explain this one?

Reward costs*: The amount that money that will cost you to fulfill the rewards.

Fees*: This includes the fees you’ll have to pay both to Kickstarter and IndieGoGo as well as the fees that the payment processing company will charge you. This second amount varies depending on the company (Amazon Payments, Paypal, etc) but I set to 4%, which is on the higher end of the spectrum.

For project*: This is the amount you’ll actually have for your project once you fulfill the rewards and pay everyone.

*Automatically generated. Don’t touch these cells if you don’t want to mess the formulas. If you’re a hacker, geek, etc or you don’t mind downloading the spreadsheet again, be my guest though.

And that’s it. Take into account that this is not an official calculator and it’ll just give you an approximation. Your actual results may vary, so don’t sue me if they do.indiegogo marketing
