A cloud company has smashed its crowdfunding target of £71,000 in one week and is eyeing expansion.

WEDG provides a safe and secure solution for users to store digital content such as photos, videos, emails, business as well as sensitive information.

Users of the WEDG device can plug it into a router at home or work and access files from anywhere around the world.

The Manchester firm, launched in December last year, started a crowdfunding initiative on the Indiegogo platform last month in a bid to raise more than £70,000.

With more than 80,000 already secured, the company could end up being overfunded with the crowdfunding campaign due to finish on November 21.

Shehbaz Afzal, the CEO and Inventor of WEDG, said: “We hit our £71,000 funding target in week one and are now pursuing stretch goals to make WEDG more versatile for our backers and users.

“The funds will enable us to start manufacturing the WEDG here in Manchester.

“We also have a number of exciting ideas for the money if we overfund, which include a HDMI connection to play movies from the WEDG on your TV, enablewireless capabilities, the ability to change the colour of the LEDs on front of the WEDG to suit your mood or living room/office style and my personal favourite – to develop a web based office suite like ‘Microsoft Office’ or ‘Google docs’ that’s free and offers the ability for colleagues to work on a document or presentation together, remotely at the same time.”

Shehbaz founded the company in December 2013 but the project started in June 2013 following the Edward Snowden revelations.

The firm was initially based at MMU Small business Incubator ‘Innospace’ on Chorlton Street and later relocated with Innospace to their new site on Chester Street.

Five core full-time staff are employed and the plan is to double the workforce after the crowdfunding initiative finishes

Shehbaz added: “Within the next three years we’d like to have an ‘enterprise class’ version of the WEDG, so that we can offer a suitable solution to our growing professional and business clients.

“WEDG also provides a convenient and simple to use website platform; all together WEDG is business ready without the no monthly fees or free account limitations.”
