About this project

Who we are:

techJOYnT Academy teaches students Science, Technology, Engineering and Math throughengaging and hands-on courses.This is what is called STEM Education. We provide some fun and exciting activities for grades K-12 and beyond in after-school programs. Examples of our classes include LEGO robotics, iPhone/Android app development, digital graphic arts and video game design.

In 2014 we delivered more than 14 000 hours of class, for a total of 4000 students. But we want to go further!!!

What we do:

We offer after-schools programs to schools in Oklahoma, with classes in Game Design, Electronics, App Development, and Robotics. We also have a location in Oklahoma City where individual students can come in and learn those activities with our instructors a few days a week. We teach kids between the ages of 6 and 18 years old. We also participate inscientific competitions such as Botball or Video Game Challenge.

What we are trying to solve:

The Afterschool Alliance Report explains that nearly 80% of future careers will require some STEM skills. A stimulating STEM education is essential for developing the basic analytical, problem solving and critical thinking skills central to academic achievement and workforce readiness in the 21st century. 

Afterschool programs play a major role in addressing this issue: they excite and sustain interest, build reals kills, help youth connect STEM to their lives and communities, and introduce them to a diverse array of professionals. (Afterschool Alliance report).

Afterschool programs are a way to increase STEM learning for students by offering extended opportunities that engage students in hands-on experiential settings. Investing in quality afterschool programs enriched with STEM education components can strengthen a pipeline of college-ready students, prevent dropouts and prepare a skilled workforce for USA’s emerging and growing industries. (Oklahoma Afterschool Network).

Kids need more STEM afterschool programs to be able to learn new set of skills that will help them in their future careers. techJOYnT wants to change these kids' world and open new doors for them.

Our goal:

Our mission here at techJOYnT is to reach kids no matter where they are. We believe that every kid deserves an access to quality STEM education, and we want to provide such activities to more students for this year 2015. Our goal is to provide 12 more after-school programs this year in the Oklahoma state as well as North Texas. Each program lasts 8 weeks, and teaches 16 hours of any scientific or technological class to a group of 25 students. It can be game design, robotics, app development, etc...

We want to be able to offer these programs to children, families and schools that have a limited budget and cannot afford to provide after-school STEM programs. We need you to help us get enough funds to cover our costs so that we can offer these classes for free to kids who want to learn more about science, technology, engineering and math.

How will the kids benefit:

At techJOYnT we have developed our curriculum in a way that helps kids learn scientific and technological skills with a hands-on approach and in a team work environment to maximize their learning experience.

  • We use robotics, app development and game design to entice young minds, so we can help them discover their natural abilities, creativity and strengths.
  • Our programs help students develop their social abilities like public speaking through group discussions and teamwork building exercises.
  • They learn team work by cooperating on different projects and challenges.
  • By working together on a common goal, students develop valuable life skills like mutual respect, listening to others' ideas and planning. We also put a strong emphasis on critical thinking, complex problem analysis and reflection.

Budget:

We are aiming for 12 schools, which is 48 000 dollars, but our stretch goals are 1 more school each $4000, so keep donating so we can serve more kids!!!!

Risks and challenges

Running a social enterprise like techJOYnT is difficult in itself, because the funds are missing. Schools cannot spend much of their budget on after-school programs, especially when they do not know if it is really helpful for their students. We have been working now three years on this, and we are starting to get results, but it takes time. 
We understand that this is only a short term solution but schools will be able to see how beneficial those STEM classes are to the students, and they will hopefully be able to spend some of their budget in the future for such STEM after-school programs. 
We are also creating opportunities for people and businesses to donate to this cause on an ongoing basis. 
As a company we strongly believe in collaboration. Luckily we have an amazing team and we work together to solve problems as they arise.
