Husband and Wife team aim to set a new World Record for all Baby Boomers
Want to know an interesting fact? Excluding non-copyright works such as the Bible and the Koran, the world’s all-time best-selling book isGuinness World Records, formerly known as The Guinness Book of Records.
Why? Because clearly with sales exceeding 100 million copies since 1955, there are untold millions of people worldwide – including my wife and I - who have dreamed of one day becoming world record holders.
But that is what makes us different to the vast majority of people. Far from being just “dreamers", we are “doers” who have conceived an ambitious plan to set a newWorld Long Distance Electric Bike Record on the EuroVelo European cycle route network in 2015/16. The record attempt will be videoed throughout, with the resultant film and book to be showcased at cycling trade shows, seminars and through other yet-to-be-determined outlets.
So who are we, you are entitled to ask? We are Gary and Rachel Corbett, two ordinary Australians aged 60 and 56 respectively, who not only want to set the above record for our own satisfaction, but for all of the Baby Boomer generation. These days it seems all you ever hear about are the achievements of Generations X and Y, but long before aforesaid Xs and Ys came along, it was the Baby Boomers who were trailblazing the world. And so it will be again – at least in the electric bike world - when we eventually officially lay claim to the coveted world record for the longest journey ever officially recorded on an electric bicycle.
It won’t be an easy challenge given the time, distance, cost and logistics involved but we know the end result will be more than worth the effort for a host of reasons.

Gary Corbett is an award-winning Australian journalist who since retiring from a career spanning 30-plus years working as a newspaper journalist, now concentrates on writing about all aspects of the organised cycle tour industry. Over the past 10 years Gary has cycled well in excess of 30,000 kilometres completing guided, self-guided, bike and barge and long distance solo tours in Europe, Australia, Asia and South America.
Rachel, Gary’s wife and cycling buddy, is equally obsessed about cycle touring. A primary/middle school teacher and the IT expert of the family, she has always had a passion for travelling and learning about new cultures and languages. In fact it is never difficult to persuade Rachel to go on another travel adventure if it involves exploring yet another foreign country – especially if it is on a bicycle.
Where Will the Record Attempt be Held
Starting from London in late April 2015, the e-bike record attempt will be held mainly on the EuroVelo European cycle route network which consists of 14 transcontinental cycling routes stretching from the Atlantic to the Black Sea and the Arctic to the Mediterranean.
Our Campaign – Why We Need YOU
The bottom line is pretty simple really, what we are planning is hugely expensive! That is why we would like to think that the entire Baby Boomer generation – and also compassionate Xs and Ys out there – will get behind us so we can show the world that it is even possible for a couple on the “wrong side of their mid-50s” to become world record holders.
To successfully set a new world record will be a defining achievement for both of us. To put it simply we are putting everything we have into the record attempt in terms of time, money and commitment, and are hopeful that the Indiegogo community will recognise our dedication to achieving our dream by helping out financially. The resultant film will, in a small way, be a tangible record of your financial assistance.
How the Funds Will be Used
All of the money raised through Indiegogo will go directly to purchasing much needed computer, video and camera equipment and all of the other gear needed to make the record breaking ride a reality such as lightweight tents, camping equipment, biking specific equipment, insurances etc, etc, etc … the list just goes on and on!
Risks & Challenges
There are risks and challenges associated with anything you do in life. But when it involves up to 12 months of cycling in all sorts of climatic conditions across all sorts of terrain in addition to the daily necessity to find places to camp, charge the e-bike batteries and the other 1001 things that have to be dealt with logistically on a self-contained fully loaded extended cycle tour, there is plenty that can and at times WILL go wrong. All of these moments and more will be the subject of the video we will be shooting.
But while we clearly acknowledge the risks and challenges to be faced are very real, it is important to clarify one very important fact ... we are far from elite athletes. To put it simply we are just two people who love cycling - and cycling together. Like anyone our age we have our fair share of niggling medical issues, have dodgy knees and are always on the lookout for a good chiropractor to keep our joints working as they should. But given all of the above, we are supremely confident of being able to methodically chip away at the kilometres to eventually lay claim to completing the longest ever electric bike journey undertaken.
Other Ways You Can Help
If, for whatever reason, you are unable to help with a cash donation, we totally understand – but that far from makes you less important to us. The biggest help you can give us is to alert anyone and everyone who may have an interest in what we are attempting to achieve. As such can you please make some noise in your social media circles and use the Indiegogo share tools to spread the word. Any help at all will be greatly appreciated.
