Autism(e) Coach, an app for and (partly) by children and youngsters with autism.

Autism is common mental disorder which can be difficult to live with. Everyday things which are easy for us can be very difficult to handle for a person with autism. This mental disorder is unfortunately quite common. More common than most people think.

About 3 to 4 in 1,000 children and youngsters have an autism spectrum disorder, which equates in the Netherlands to about 12,000 children and youngsters. The best known and most common form is "classic" autism, then PDD-NOS and Asperger are sharing the second place.

Professional counselors today know very much and often offer proper guidance and support. But maybe sometimes they forget the value of the knowledge and experience of the "experts", people with autism, forgotten. "It takes one to know one" here is perhaps an appropriate expression.

After all, they know best which difficulties they encounter in day to day life and sometimes as well as how to handle them.

Therefore, I want to develop an app allow for and (partly) by children and adolescents of about 11 to 21 years old with an autism spectrum disorder, named Autism Coach.

The purpose of the app is that some young people with autism can be more independent and get more out of their lives. For example independently being able to do groceries, walk the dog, going to school or daycare.

Autism Coach is not only for the youngsters themselves, but also to include parents, caregivers, social workers and teachers.
