Teaching kids life skills while informing on the benefits of eating healthy through hands on cooking classes.

About this project

A Yummy Future was founded by Jean Sonnier, a mother of four kids and EMT, to teach kids about healthy eating through hands on cooking classes throughout Los Angeles County. As a parent I am always worrying about news relating to the health of children and what I need to do to protect my children. Earlier this year a chart was shown to me with the rise of obesity over the past couple decades. Like most parents it can sometimes be hard to resist going to get fast food for dinner after a long day of work, so after being shown this I thought that I could possibly be affecting my kids with the choice to get fast food after school or ordering pizza for dinner. I wanted to help my kids grow to live healthy lives but often we have those days where we want nothing more than to get home and sleep so I would still resort to getting the kids something on the way home from school or ordering out. That’s when I decided to teach my kids how to cook and make their own meals and snacks and it was a fun experience not only for me but for my kids as well. That’s when A Yummy Future was born.

We want to help kids everywhere have a chance to control their health by making good choices in the foods they eat. With obesity rates reaching 30% in the U.S. we are dedicated to creating health conscience youths that can create a better future for later generations. We want to help kids learn and develop cooking skills and healthy minds that they can take with them long after they leave the class.

Currently A Yummy Future is set to host a variety of summer cooking courses at five different parks and recreation centers this summer. Due to budget we can’t offer more classes right now for the facilities that are requesting us to host cooking classes. With your help, come fall, together we can bring more classes to more kids and create a better future for our youth. All of your funds will go towards gaining more facilities, adding more instructors, after school healthy cooking class programs in schools, and expanding further and reaching more kids outside of Los Angeles County.

Our nation faces a huge problem in obesity. Although 30% of kids are overweight or obese and together we can make a difference for the future of kids throughout the country. Unhealthy eating patterns are one of the main causes for obesity in our country and we want to help combat that and instill the knowledge and importance of creating healthy eating habits in kids.

All cooking instructors are certified and insured through Healthy Hands Cooking.

Risks and challenges

The risks are minimal as we have request from facilities throughout Southern California and are providing courses this summer at facilities we already have. If our project is successfully funded you help us bring more classes to facilities we cant currently offer our classes at due to budget.
